College Diversity Series
Watch this episode of NH PBS’s The State We’re In to meet the students behind the project.
About This Series:
The Collaborative worked with our partners at the New Hampshire Press Association, whose nearly 30 members include every major news outlet in the state, to develop teams of student journalists to explore issues of diversity on the state’s college campuses.
This project was also an educational opportunity for aspiring student journalists as they learn to collect, interpret, and present information of cultural significance.
The first team of collegiate journalists was created earlier this year and tasked with collecting baseline diversity data from the state’s largest colleges and universities: Dartmouth College, Keene State College, Plymouth State University, Southern New Hampshire University and University of New Hampshire. From there, the students developed, reported and produced a series of articles inspired by the data.
The student journalists included Sofia El Hakim, a Junior at Keene State College, Evan Edmonds, a 2021 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Alena Masterson, a 2021 graduate of Franklin Pierce University and Kenneth Tran, a Junior, at St. Anselm College. Additional reporting and editing was provided by John M. Bassett, Rick Green, Phil Kincade and Melanie Plenda.
