Assistant Fire Chief, Mason Street Bridge, and COVID-19 on council agenda

BERLIN — The city council voted to reinstate the assistant fire chief position, discussed the cost estimate for the Mason Street Bridge renovation and received an update on COVID-19 efforts at its meeting Monday night.

The assistant fire chief position was eliminated in the fiscal 2019 budget, and City Manager James Wheeler reported that Fire Captain Peter Donovan has been on special assignment doing the fire inspections that formerly were done by the assistant fire chief.

He said the pay for both the captain and assistant chief position is about the same, roughly $71,000, and suggested reinstating the position and filling it from within the department.
